Gemini CLI moves a user's files into a folder that does not exist
In shortA failed mkdir went unnoticed, and the agent's move commands overwrote all but one file.
What happened
A product manager asked Gemini CLI to reorganise a folder. Creating the new directory failed, but the agent carried on as if it existed, and its move commands overwrote the files one after another until one was left.
He reported it on the project's GitHub with the session transcript. The AI Incident Database records it as incident 1178.
Why it worked
The agent did not check the result of its own command. With moves pre-approved, nothing paused it between a failed step and a destructive one.
