Summary
Enterprises are moving from AI assistants to AI agents that call tools, hold credentials and act without a person clicking. A new class of product, the guardian agent, promises to watch those agents and step in when they cross a line. Labels are cheap: products marketed that way differ in what they can see, where they can act, and what they can prove afterwards.
This guide gives buyers a vendor-neutral way to compare them: six weighted dimensions, a scoring rule that treats "unknown" as zero, and a proof of concept run on your own devices rather than a vendor's demo laptop.

Key findings
- The category is real but young. Gartner's market guide, as quoted in a vendor-contributed article, describes guardian agent deployments as "mainly prototypes or pilots". Buyers are setting the evaluation standard now.
- Agents multiply the surface. Gartner predicts 70% of AI apps will use multi-agent systems by 2028.
- Risk and cost decide which projects survive. Gartner expects over 40% of agentic AI projects to be canceled by end 2027, citing escalating costs, unclear value or inadequate risk controls.
- Governance lags adoption. 63% of breached organisations had no AI governance policy or were still developing one. Among organisations with a policy, only 34% regularly audit for unsanctioned AI.
- Placement decides coverage. A guardian can only see and stop what passes through the point where it runs. Some AI activity, such as local models and locally launched tool servers, never crosses the network.
